Elevenmile Canyon is a renowned recreational area. It is a favorite site for fishing, kayaking, hiking, and bouldering (or rock climbing). But the recreation that takes place in the canyon contributes to erosion. This stretch of the river is under a Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) for sediment control. The TMDL requires federal, state, and local government agencies to take actions that reduce sediment. The United States Forest Service manages Elevenmile Canyon, and to comply with the TMDL, is working on trail and road restoration projects that are designed to reduce sediment load entering the river.
