{"id":976,"date":"2013-02-22T16:06:41","date_gmt":"2013-02-22T16:06:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/learn.uppersouthplatte.org\/?page_id=976"},"modified":"2021-03-30T16:48:21","modified_gmt":"2021-03-30T16:48:21","slug":"reducing-solid-waste-for-a-healthier-tomorrow-teachers","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/uppersouthplatte.org\/learn\/reducing-solid-waste-for-a-healthier-tomorrow-teachers\/","title":{"rendered":"Reducing Solid Waste for a Healthier Tomorrow &#8211; Teachers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dear Teachers,<\/p>\n<p>Thank you for choosing this module! \u00a0When humans started settling into villages, towns, and cities, our ancestors discovered how big a problem solid waste could be.\u00a0 Now, with so much of what we use designed to be disposable or quickly replaced with the newest version, our solid waste problem keeps growing.\u00a0 Over time, we have developed many different ways of dealing with our trash, but we have yet to discover a perfect way of managing ever-increasing amounts of solid waste.\u00a0 As populations around the globe keep growing, communities have adapted to their solid waste situations.\u00a0 Unfortunately, for many this has led to degraded environments and poor health.<a href=\"http:\/\/uppersouthplatte.org\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/garbage-landfill-100522-sw.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1004 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/uppersouthplatte.org\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/garbage-landfill-100522-sw-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"garbage-landfill-100522-sw\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uppersouthplatte.org\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/garbage-landfill-100522-sw-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/uppersouthplatte.org\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/garbage-landfill-100522-sw-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/uppersouthplatte.org\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/garbage-landfill-100522-sw.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As we think about the huge amount of solid waste we generate, it is also important to consider all the materials going into the products, packaging, food, etc. that end up as waste.\u00a0 The resources to make these goods are finite. The best way to conserve our resources and limit the problems associated with solid waste is to reduce our consumption and therefore our waste.\u00a0 This is the overarching theme of the Reducing Solid Waste for a Healthier Tomorrow Module.<\/p>\n<p>In this module, students will have the chance to explore the problems of solid waste at home and around the world and compare strategies for managing our garbage.\u00a0 Ultimately, students will think of ways they can make changes in their own lives to minimize the waste generated at the individual, family, school, and community levels.\u00a0 Understanding the three R\u2019s \u2013 reduce, reuse, recycle \u2013 plus compost will be crucial as students think about solutions to solid waste problems.<\/p>\n<p>To facilitate this discussion, students will participate in a Waste Reduction Summit.\u00a0 Student groups will research and become \u2018experts\u2019 on different topics related to solid waste. \u00a0Using their research to inform their conclusions and recommendations, students will then present their topic to the rest of the Summit audience.\u00a0 Have fun learning about this interesting, if smelly, issue!<\/p>\n<p>Sincerely,<\/p>\n<p>Theresa Springer<br \/>\nEnvironmental Education Coordinator<\/p>\n<p>Coalition for the Upper South Platte<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/cusp.ws\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">http:\/\/cusp.ws<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Teacher&#8217;s Guide<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Reducing Solid Waste for a Healthier Tomorrow Module was designed to teach students about the consequences of our production and management of solid waste and get students thinking about ways to reduce solid waste output. \u00a0The module allows students to explore these ideas further in the framework of a Solid Waste Reduction Summit in which groups of students will research a topic and present information, conclusions, and solutions to their classmates, the Summit audience. \u00a0The module consists of seven presentation topics \u2013 trash in developing countries, solid waste and reform in China, e-waste, landfills, landfill gas, solid waste incineration, and single stream recycling. \u00a0For each presentation, a guideline document and PowerPoint presentation that students can populate with information are provided. \u00a0This<a href=\"http:\/\/uppersouthplatte.org\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Teacher-Guide.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/uppersouthplatte.org\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Teachers-Guide.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Teacher&#8217;s Guide<\/a>\u00a0will give you more detailed information about this module.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Objectives<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Students will:<br \/>\n(1) Evaluate explicit and implicit viewpoints, values, attitudes, and assumptions concealed in speech, writing, and illustration<br \/>\n(2)\u00a0Articulate the position of self and others using experiential and material logic<br \/>\n(3) Gather information from a variety of sources;
